Flag vandalism

We are seeing a significant amount of flag vandalism coming from socks. I'm not clear if this is coming from socks of Szm020730 or Nv7801 (I've seen users tagged as both).

The modus operandi is as such:

• Uploading new fake flags
• Adding said fake flags to galleries.
• Request existing flags be renamed. This is usually done under criterion 2; even though they don't fall under the spirit or letter of criterion 2, they are almost always fulfilled by one of the Commons filemovers. The dates are unsourced and often just wrong, which is why this uploader got banned to begin with.

I am going to write up a script to mass undo all of these file moves.

In the meantime, I am specifically going to leave a friendly note for Commons file movers. Please do not move files which don't fall under the file move criteria. Just because some random user tags it doesn't mean the file should be moved. Please check the file history that file moves haven't been declined previously.

Thank you for the notification. Hmm i think o moved two of them? File:Flag of Yangon Region (2011–2022).svg. Here, however, only a minus was replaced by an En Dash, which I think is correct. The other: File:Flag of Kayah State (1974–2010).svg. Also seems to be correct according to Wikipedia articles, see e.g. nl:Vlag van Kayah or en:List of Burmese flags and also my:မြန်မာနိုင်ငံ၏ အလံများ စာရင်း. ၁၉၇၄–၂၀၁၀ means 1974–2010 זיו「Ziv」 • For love letters and other notes 22:15, 14 April 2025 (UTC)

Please don't replace the ASCII hyphen-minus with en dashes; it forces most users to copy and paste instead of typing the name, for no clear reason to them, and for some very minor typographic improvement.--Prosfilaes (talk) 02:22, 15 April 2025 (UTC)

I'm not offering a solid universal rule. I'm just saying in this case, the advantages of the change are not worth the disadvantages. There's a big difference IMO between this and Arabic or Hebrew; if I see an ASCII name, I might try to copy it when editing instead of taking my hands off the keyboard and waving the mouse around, and in this case it wouldn't work for nonobvious reasons. If I see a name written in a script I can't type, I'll copy it. Smart quotes have similar problems, but they're a little more visible than changing - to –.--Prosfilaes (talk) 07:26, 15 April 2025 (UTC)

I think that needs a general guideline if it is more important that file or page names are typographically correct or easy to type. GPSLeo (talk) 17:40, 15 April 2025 (UTC)

I tend to default to the latter (being easier to type means that it is easier to find), although I will sometimes copy some things rather than manually type them when adding categories to a new category I've created. Abzeronow (talk) 18:31, 15 April 2025 (UTC)

It's extra work, but redirects can be made from the other version of the filename to ensure that either works. Enwiki has a bot that automatically creates hyphen redirects for article names with endashes; while that's probably not needed here, users can always preemptively create redirects if they might be useful, especially for a widely used file. The current guideline says that they should be avoided. From this I would read it that ASCII should be used as long as using ASCII does not violate writing rules. If we want that ASCII is used even if that violates writing rules we need to add a sentence on this to the guideline. GPSLeo (talk) 05:14, 16 April 2025 (UTC)

@GPSLeo: may I ask what you mean by "writing rules"? In particular, are you saying that using the ASCII "hyphen/minus/dash" as a hyphen, a minus, or a dash "violates writing rules"? Or are you just referring to the fact that many languages written with the Latin alphabet use non-ASCII letters (certainly I would not change "Timișoara" to "Timisoara" or "Büchner" to "Buchner", or even to "Buechner"). - Jmabel ! talk 02:27, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

The person that i added the media for is well known neurosurgeon and the Category:Yaser Alsaidi and Media in category "Yaser Alsaidi" are linked to many wiki projects and news links supported added are from national and international news media sources like Aljazeera English, TRT Arabia , ITV and Good Morning Britain, Katapult (Magazin), Espreso TV, Vysoky Zamok (newspaper), ModernGhana and from well known journalists that you can check on them on the internet and they all got Wikipedia pages so they are legitimate, so ther is no reason to request deletion for this page. best regards, Victoria Victoria Kuchereno (talk) 18:48, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

Sorry if this is the worng noticeboard, but I believe this file is just completely mislabeled. The site to which it's sourced seems to have never used it (archive), and another version of it from Charles Henry Hawes (on Archive here, also uploaded to Commons here) comes with no mention of Bogd Khan, instead labeling the subject "TARANATHA, A BURIAT "KHUBILGAN" OR "LIVING BUDDHA". This might not be the best place for this, but I can't go on with nominating more than 100s of uploads one by one. Neither can I batch tag and start a regular DR for all the uploads right now. DRs also take weeks and sometimes months before any action is taken. Majority of their uploads are copyvio. 10s of images from 2023 New Delhi G20 Summit have been uploaded as own work. I have nominated some of them for SD. 10s of ancient images from 1960s to 1990s from the Hindu Shrine of Vaishno Devi in Jammu's Katra have been uploaded as own work. A few DRs were started by @A1Cafel more than a week ago. Also so many recent images with bad picture quality from the same shrine have been uploaded as own work. The quality of the image and the Exif Metadata in the files doesn't suggest own work. Please do what the community thinks should be the correct thing to do. Thank you.
